Finding a date has been the least of her struggles. Samey was born to Togolese parents who came to the U.S. via Quebec.

Her family moved to Anoka, Minnesota, when she was eight years old, where she was forced to learn English from scratch.

In her college application essay, published in The Tab, she wrote about the difficulties of being in a low-income household and her father struggling to find work, despite being a qualified doctor.

"I was at the top of my class and had a nearly perfect GPA; English was my strongest subject. And yet my father, Dr. Yaovi Remi Samey, to this day spends his nights working a low salary security job because no one will employ him, simply because of his accent," she wrote in her essay.

"I was faced with the fact that prejudice was the biggest hurdle my dad faced in this country, the same one that seemed to be simultaneously allowing me to grow."

As we all know years on, prom is just one night. But a top education can set you up for life.
