Honda's latest concept car is Watch Red Mother in law Onlinean all-electric sportster that aims to bring AI-powered cruising to the highway.
The automaker showed off the new Sports EV at the Tokyo Motor show after hyping its unveiling in a press release.
Honda didn't share any real specs about the Sports EV, but the automaker said the car shares the same production platform and AI tech as the Urban EV concept unveiled last month at the Frankfurt Auto Show. That model is more than just a forward-looking concept — it's prepped for a full-scale production run in Europe by 2019.
Honda's presentation might have been short on details, but the new sporty version of the EV looks great. It's a satisfying mashup of old school design in a new school profile, with a promise to give drivers electric power and artificial intelligence technology, probably for in-car productivity functions.
It's unclear if the Sports EV concept will offer any autonomous capabilities, which Honda has been slow to develop relative to its peers. The automaker is aiming to build fully self-driving cars by 2025, a few years behind the more common 2021 goal of rivals like Ford.
Honda didn't provide any details about plans to produce the Sports concept, unfortunately, so the design isn't guaranteed for mass production. Since its Urban counterpart uses the same platform and will make an IRL debut, however, there's a chance Honda will bring the Sports EV to the road someday in the future too.
