We've already filled you in on Australiathe films we've loved so far in 2017, and below, we've highlighted just a few that you should start to get excited about for the back half of the year.
Enjoy.
Obviouslywe're not going to make a "most anticipated" list without getting some Star Warsin there. While last year's Rogue Onetook a detour into the past, The Last Jedipromises to pick up right where The Force Awakensleft off, bringing back our new favorite characters and adding some new ones besides, all under the stylish direction of Looperand Breaking Bad's Rian Johnson. Not for nothing, The Last Jediwill also be Carrie Fisher's final performance as Leia. Bring tissues.
Okay, this one's cheating a bit, as much of Team Mashable has already seen and loved Call Me By Your Name. But I'm telling you, guys: believe the hype. Luca Guadagnino's coming-of-age romance is nothing short of exquisite, pulsing with life and heady with desire. Featuring career-making performances by Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Namewill leave you smiling through your tears.
Boy, Steven Soderbergh's retirement from movies sure turned out to be a short one. Not that we're complaining – to the contrary, Logan Luckylooks like an irresistible reminder of what we've missed in his absence. Imagine one of his Ocean'smovies, but set in the fast-paced world of NASCAR and populated by Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and scene-stealing Daniel Craig rocking a peroxide blond crewcut and a thick Southern accent. Need we say more?
Tommy Wiseau's The Roomis not a good movie. But if the hype out of SXSW can be trusted, James Franco's movie about The Roomis apparently a pretty good one. Franco, who's spent so much of his career straining to be weird, seems like the perfect choice to direct and star in a movie about Wiseau, a strange and complicated man who gave the world a movie so singularly terrible, it's gone on to become something of an icon in its own right.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already had two home runs this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Can Thor: Ragnarokcontinue that winning streak? Only Odin knows – but with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, and Tessa Thomspon in the cast, we aren't about to bet against this one. Plus, if anyone can turn Chris Hemsworth into the comedy star he's clearly meant to be, it's gotta be What We Do in the Shadowsdirector Taika Waititi.
