Google is Hindi Archivesteaming up with MediaTek to develop its next-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), which is set to enter production at TSMC next year, sources told US tech media The Information on Monday. The move allows MediaTek to secure a share of Google’s TPU design service orders, previously handled by Broadcom. Currently, Google, MediaTek, and Broadcom have not commented on the matter. TPUs have long been seen as a competitive advantage for Google in the AI race and are key to reducing its reliance on NVIDIA’s AI chips. According to market research firm Omdia, Google spent between $6 billion and $9 billion on TPU development and manufacturing last year. [The Information]
