We used to think there were 976 coins to collect in Donkey Kong 64. Thanks to a thorough speedrunner,Fantasy Archives we now know there are 977.
Speedrunner Isotarge discovered the previously unknown location of a rainbow coin in Donkey Kong 64 in the Fungi Forest level using data analysis tools. You won't need to data mine to find it yourself, though -- it's perfectly smashable in a normal playthrough. The dirt pile housing it is cleverly hidden in some tall grass, masking it from view where it has stayed undiscovered for 17 years up until several days ago.

Here's to all the completionist speedrunners slamming their hands on their desks, knowing they'll have to recapture their speed records to hold their titles after this new discovery.
