Ahem. "Whoa."
Almost 16 years ago,Sunheri Yaadein (2020) PulsePrime Hindi Short Film The Matrix Revolutionshit theaters and brought the Wachowskis' daring sci-fi trilogy to a close. Or so we thought. Lana Wachowski is returning to write and direct a fourth movie in the series, and she won't be alone.
Stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will also reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity, respectively. Warner Bros. Pictures exec Toby Emmerich confirmed the news on Tuesday, per Variety.
"We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrixwith Lana," he said. "Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrixuniverse."
The report notes that production is expected to begin in early 2020, going off a script from Wachowski, plus Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell. There's no word on the possible involvement of any other series veterans, notably Laurence Fishburne and co-creator Lilly Wachowski.
The Matrixwas a massive hit when it hit theaters in 1999, presenting a far-out sci-fi concept in which (spoiler alert?) humanity has ceded dominance of Earth artificial intelligence. In this bleak future, we live out our lives in an artificial construct known as the Matrix while machines use the energy that sustains us to power themselves.

The rich central concept nonetheless lived beyond those movies, notably in the 2003 anime anthology, The Animatrix.
There have been rumblings over the years of a return to the series that made the Wachowskis famous, but it's finally happening -- probably thanks in no small part to the ongoing John Wick-induced Keanu Reeves-aissance.
