SEE ALSO: Roseanne Barr leaves Twitter after racist tirade, Wanda Sykes quits 'Roseanne'The cancellation comes after Roseanne Barr's racist tweet about Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. Barr eventually apologized and said she was leaving Twitter.
But her apology wasn't enough to shield her from the consequences. Producer Wanda Sykes immediately announced she was leaving the show. (Co-showrunner Whitney Cummings had announced her exit days before, for unrelated reasons.)
Then, in a statement, ABC confirmed the cancellation and denounced Barr's earlier comment as "abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values."
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
UPDATE:Barr has also been dropped by her agent, ICM Partners. The Hollywood Reporterhas obtained an internal memo announcing the decision:
We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning. What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency. Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client.
Roseannehad just returned to television in March, 21 years after it ended its original nine-season run. Initially, it was successful in the ratings – so successful, in fact, that ABC renewed Roseannefor another season just days after the season premiere.
But it wasn't without controversy, much of it focused on Barr herself. Barr has been spreading hateful right-wing propaganda for years, including, this very morning, the conspiracy theory that George Soros is a Nazi (he is not).
Somehow, none of this precluded ABC from picking up the Roseannerevival in the first place. Sure, it's nice ABC finally took a stand against Barr's bigotry – but if, at this point, they were shocked by her comments, that might be on them.
